Today 1 in 150 children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Upon receiving this heartbreaking diagnosis, parents begin their search for the elusive cure that will heal their child, and return their family to normalcy. Yet as these families explore the best ways to treat the child they love, they encounter conflicting approaches and endless barriers. This film is about families trying to navigate their way to a better place, trying to understand what the future holds without ready-made roadmaps or guides. This is a film about families who have entered, and are living in, the maze of autism.
I wrote this blurb about Living the Autism Maze in 2005, the year it came out. I had no idea how effective the film would be for Vermonters already in the maze, to have a template of thoughts from the film to spur some real legislative advocacy efforts. I am in awe always of the families in this culture we now call autism. In making the film I made discoveries that did not make the final edit about the inequity of funding streams within our autism community, which has nothing to do with the families, but with policy makers.
The Next Frontier radio show is Vermont-made, but is streamed on the internet. Click here to listen to archived shows or in real time. I hope you enjoy it.
Contact me to see this film, which is a snapshot in time, and click on the archived radio shows about autism and disabilities. You'll find it's hard to stereotype. The issues can be intense as well as delightful. Welcome again if you're visiting the site more than once!
